Origins
The ancient origins of purification are connected with mythology from the 8th century text Kojiki. Izanagi no mikoto, on his return from a journey to Yomi no Kuni (the land of the dead), purifies himself by bathing in the sea. This ritual purification of the mind and body through immersion in water, such as a waterfall or stream, continues to the modern day with devotees purging themselves of misfortune and impurities by washing their entire bodies.
